UNN
Be It Resolved
Kelowna August 21 & 22, 1999

After hearing about the ill-treatment of the Lyackson First Nation by MacMillan Bloedel, the following resolution was passed on August 22, 1999 by the United Native Nations (UNN) of British Columbia

Whereas: Aboriginal People's traditional lands and resources are being exploited by companies such as MacMillan Bloedel with little if any benefit to Aboriginal people despite the Delgamuukw decision

Whereas:MacMillan Bloedel is being sold to Weyerhauser, the world's largest forest company and that Canada and BC may approve the sale after public hearings

Be it therefore resolved that: The UNN demand Canada and BC put a hold on the proposed sale until Aboriginal people receive guarantees that their interests will be addressed

Be it further resolved that: The UNN call on all Aboriginal people and the people of Canada and the world to support this resolution to delay the sale of MacMillan Bloedel.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR:The above resolution and background information was widely distributed to provincial government officials. The sale of MacBlo to Weyerhaeuser was approved by the BC Government despite First Nations' concerns. In meetings and discussions with Lyackson First Nation representatives, Weyerhaeuser officials have stated they inherit all obligations from MacMillan Bloedel. There's been a lot of talking, little action to resolve Lyackson's concerns about Valdes Island - the Traditional Territory - the Homelands.
