![]() ![]() BC Election 2001 - Getting Out The Vote Historic for Aboriginals The Calm Before the Swarm (I know it's supposed to be storm, but this is poetic license - besides the Legislature is being swarmed by the Liberal hordes) News and Comment by Tehaliwaskenhas - Bob Kennedy, Oneida Gordon Campbell and his Liberals may fill the seats in the BC Legislature but not one of them was around this day. Not that anyone was surprised. After all, this was an Aboriginal rally and there's absolutely no love lost between the Aboriginal community and the so-called Liberals. (They are not to be confused with real Liberals. These guys lean so far to the right that Stockwell Day would feel right at home.) ![]() It was a small gathering - a dozen or so, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. But the message was big and it was clear. Get Out and Vote and Vote for the NDP so Gordon Campbell will be held accountable by an Official Opposition. The pollsters predict a Liberal Landslide and even suggest Campbell and friends may take all seats - the most dangerous kind of government, I believe. The 2001 BC Election campaign has been a significant, historic happening. While most BC residents jumped ship, Aboriginals rallied on behalf of the New Democrats - like candidate Carole James, a Metis woman and a Victoria School District Trustee. She is pictured above with rally organizer and Aboriginal community activist Rose Henry. Rose Henry and John Harris, an urban Aboriginal Rep for the Snuneymuxw /Nanaimo First Nation (pictured above with NDP candidate Charley Beresford) - delivered some poignant reminders about what the Liberals represent and what they have and haven't said during the campaign. They have said they will hold a Treaty Referendum. But they haven't said anything about the issues that are important to Aboriginal families and communities.
