Tribute to Ronald Cross
VETERAN OF 1990 MOHAWK
CRISIS AT OKA MOHAWK WARRIOR "LASAGNA" RON CROSS PASSED AWAY November 3, 1999
CBC Report November 3, 1999
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: Contacted at Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, Kahn-Tineta Horn, a fellow Mohawk who participated in the 1990 Protection of Mohawk Territory action with Cross, told Turtle Island Native Network their community is shocked by Ronald Cross' passing. She said he was a big symbol for them, and he was there when he was needed. In 1992, Cross was sentenced to six years in prison for aggravated assault, uttering death threats, mischief and possessing a weapon in the presence of Canadian Forces soldiers. He was beaten by police and the only one jailed for the events of 1990. Horn says the stress of all the events in his life, the beatings, the trial, jail time, it was all just too much for Cross and that's what killed him, she said. He leaves a wife and three children and a nation in mourning. Meanwhile, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs meeting in Kelowna, British Columbia paid tribute to Cross by opening their assembly with moments of silence to honour him as a warrior. It was only recently, almost ten years after they beat Ronald Cross while in custody, did the Quebec police officers get their wrists slapped for what they did to him.
