CRTC Hearings Burnaby, British Columbia
The following is from the oral presentation made by NewCap Broadcasting President Bob Templeton who is seeking a smooth jazz radio licence for Vancouver.
NewCap is Aboriginal Voices Radio’s corporate partner or sponsor if you prefer. Rather than go for government handouts the deal is, every time NewCap gets approval for a radio licence, then monies are provided to AVR toward the establishment of a national network for Aboriginal people in Canada.
It’s a unique approach to providing funds as part of a radio licence application. In fact, it is a first in Canada with such a large potential commitment to Aboriginal radio.
OUR ABORIGINAL VOICES RADIO CONTRIBUTION WILL BRING A NEW VOICE TO CANADIAN RADIO
Bob Templeton: In addition to supporting local jazz music - Newcap is allocating over half of its direct benefits to the development of the Aboriginal Voices Radio Network (AVRN). If licensed in Vancouver, Newcap will make $4.2 million dollars in direct contributions to Aboriginal broadcasting over a seven-year licence term:
These commitments will have an immediate and visible impact. The proposed recipients will be before you in a few days, and they are ready to take their place in the system. The Broadcasting Act expects that programming reflecting Canada’s aboriginal cultures should be provided as resources become available. Newcap’s willingness to devote those resources testifies to our strength and uniqueness as a broadcaster.
In addition to our direct support of the Aboriginal Voices Radio Network, Newcap is also proposing $763,000 in indirect technical and administrative support, over a 7-year licence term, to launch and operate AVRN’s Vancouver re-transmitter service.
