It was started in 1995 to support survivors. It has supported many First Nations and continues to provide support in the areas of hope, healing and reconciliation. The mandate of the Indian Residential School SURVIVORS Society (formerly known as the Provincial Residential School Project PRSP) is to specifically deal with the inter-generational impacts of the Indian Residential Schools and to assist individuals, families and communities in addressing results of this abuse. The youth perspective is paramount to giving the organization a more inclusive approach to this healing. One of the greatest adverse effects of the Residential School's inter-generational impact is the cultural loss and alienation, breakdown of family support systems which ultimately add to the incidences of suicide in our communities. The objective of the organization is to facilitate and co-ordinate all activities and initiatives undertaken tomove beyond the trauma through healing and reconcilation. The current generation of youth provides the strongest possible link to breaking the lingering connection to the Residential School's impact on Aboriginal people.
