“Is there anything about you that’s Indian besides your cheekbones?” asks Nathan (Nathaniel Arcand) of Adam (Justin Rain), with only a hint of sarcasm. The two grew up cousins on the same reservation, and they’ve just driven to an empty community centre in anticipation of the same cause. Over the course of 24 hours together awaiting the arrival of Cree backup for their nation’s road block, with much banter and discussion, the similarities seem to end there. With little else to do in the community centre, they debate their differences on life, women, literature, dreams, politics, education, poverty and the question of hope for the future. Despite Adam’s university education and Nathan’s “school of hard knocks” background, both men are passionately determined to do the right thing.

A disarming confrontation of hot-button issues, evoking Eyre’s Smoke Signals and Beckett's Waiting for Godot, this film brings to light the complexity of discussions occurring within Native communities today. Director Sara McIntyre touches on a host of questions First Nations people are posing to themselves and to each other, reinforcing that even those on the same side of an important cause can have radically differing perspectives. Andrew Genaille’s sharply crafted writing, coupled with heartfelt performances by both Rain and Arcand, make this stereotype-exploding comedic drama a pleasure to watch for all audiences.
Rating: PG; coarse language; sexually suggestive scene
