WINNIPEG, Manitoba: Ron Evans, the three term Chief of the Norway House Cree Nation will be the Liberal Party of Canada candidate in the next federal election.

Chief Evans was nominated by acclamation at a meeting in The Pas last night.

The 45-year Evans was born in Norway House, Manitoba and is looking forward to celebrating his 28th wedding anniversary this June with his wife Betsy.

He is an Ordained Minister of the Anglican Church and a member of the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of Keewatin. Evans is also a member of the Norway House Fisherman’s Co-op and has held a commercial fisherman’s license for eight years.

In his acceptance speech Evans said he is heartened by the new vision and direction that Prime Minister Paul Martin has outlined in the recent Speech from the Throne.

Evans said the Throne Speech revealed Prime Minister’s understanding of the needs and aspirations not only of the aboriginal peoples but those of all people living outside the major population centres.

The Liberal Candidate for Churchill pledged to work on behalf of all of the people of the far-flung constituency and urged voters to vote wisely to insure that Churchill constituency has a voice within government where priorities are established.

He received immediate support from a number of notable Aboriginal leaders including: Grand Chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO), Dr. Sidney Garrioch, Grand Rapids First Nation Chief Harold Turner; Chemawawin First Nation Chief Clarence Easter; Pimichikimak Cree Nation Chief John Muswagon; Moosakikun Cree Nation Chief Phillip Buck and Norway House Cree Nation Deputy Chief Fred Muskego.

The Liberal Candidate was introduced by Francis Flett, Deputy Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
