MOCCASIN FLATS / World Premiere November 10th, 2003

Exclusively on APTN!

Mondays and Sundays at 10:30 pm ET, repeating Saturdays at 11:00 pm ET

In the heart of Regina's urban Native ghetto, rich with tradition and
culture, hopelessness and violence, a secret has been unearthed. Bones of an unidentified Native man have been discovered at a community celebration causing many of the residents of Moccasin Flats to confront their dark past.

The secret could jeopardize Dillon¹s chances of getting out of Moccasin
Flats to attend University in the fall. Dillon (Justin Toto) has also fallen
in love with Sarah (Kristin Friday), a prostitute trying to exit the trade
and he becomes the target of her violent drug-dealing pimp and Justin¹s once best-friend, Jonathan (Landon Montour). Also starring Gordon Tootoosis as Joe and Tantoo Cardinal as Betty.

NORTH CENTRAL FILMS INC. presents:

CANADA’S FIRST ABORIGINAL CREATED AND CONTROLLED DRAMATIC TELEVISION SERIES

MOCCASIN FLATS – THE SERIES

Toronto, Ontario - MOCCASIN FLATS is a six part dramatic television series exploring the harsh realities of life in Regina’s North Central neighborhood known as Moccasin Flats. Directed by AWARD WINNING CANADIAN DIRECTOR Stacey Stewart Curtis, Moccasin Flats is Canada’s first dramatic television series to be created, written, produced and performed by an Aboriginal production team. Broadcasters include APTN (The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network), Showcase Television and SCN (Saskatchewan Communications Network). Premiering on November 10th at 10:30 pm ET / 7:30 pm PT, on APTN.

Moccasin Flats was first developed as training initiative by Jennifer Podemski and Laura J. Milliken of Toronto’s BIG SOUL PRODUCTIONS (The Seventh Generation, repREZentin’). In the summer of 2002, Big Soul Productions brought a script for a short film and a crew of five to Regina, hired 40 local Aboriginal youth to work behind the scenes and star in the film and the result was a hard-hitting realistic portrayal of life in the North Central neighborhood Moccasin Flats.

Moccasin Flats (the film), was invited to screen at the Sundance International Film Festival and The Toronto International Film Festival and received critical acclaim throughout Canada and the United States. It went on to screen at The Reel World Film Festival, Arizona Film Festival, The Canadian World Wide Short Film Festival and The Yorkton Short Film Festival where it recieved the NFB Award for ‘Innovation in Television’.

The success of the film led executive producers/creators, Jennifer Podemski and Laura J. Milliken to develop the idea into a television series. Moccasin Flats is now one of the few Canadian television series this year to receive it’s funding through Telefilm and The Candian Television Fund.

Moccasin Flats went into production on JULY 17, 2003 in North Central Regina. The cast includes: Tantoo Cardinal (Dances With Wolves, Looking for Lost Bird), Gordon Tootoosis (Legends of the Fall, The Doe Boy), Michelle Thrush (Dead Man, Don’t Call Me Tonto) and a host of new talent from the North Central area and neighboring First Nation communities.

Jennifer Podemski and Laura Milliken have always made it thier mandate to train aboriginal youth in the film and television industry, it is for this reason that they endeavored to partner the production of Moccasin Flats with an intensive ‘behind the scenes’ training program entitled “The repREZentin’ Media Empowerment Training Program”. Thirty youth from the area were accepted into the program. Each participant recieved 5 days of in-class training from SIAST (Saskatchewan Institute of Science and Technology) and over 300 hundred practical hours on the set of Moccasin Flats. Each youth graduated with a diploma in film and television production from SIAST as well as a certificate of completion from the training program.

Actors, producers, director and writer are available for interviews upon request. Tapes available upon request. Please contact:

In the heart of Regina's urban Native ghetto, rich with tradition and culture, hopelessness and violence

"Rich with tradition and culture"? I live about six blocks away from "Moccasin Flats" (which is really simply known as "The Hood" in Regina), and have relatives who live there. There are many places in Saskatchewan that are truly fine examples of native tradition and culture at its finest, but to say that this area is, is pretty much an insult to said tradition and culture. (On the other hand, it certainly is rich in "hopelessness and violence". Its cup overfloweth in those departments.)

The Hood is a horror show, plain and simple. Which is why this series is so interesting--it doesn't pull any punches about life in that area.

Moccasin Flats Schedule

Postby Red Cedar » Fri Jun 11, 2004 2:42 pm

I've been trying to watch the "Moccasin Flats" series since November, but haven't been able to catch it from the beginning. I've checked the APTN schedule, the Moccasin Flats website, and even Showcase, but I keep missing the premiere episode.

Does anyone know when it will be showing again from the beginning?

I've seen a documentary on the "Indian Posse", and I've heard about the Indian posse here on the west coast. Are Moccasin Flats and the Indian Posse related?

Thanks

This gritty dramatic series, centered in Regina’s Native ghetto, exposes the brutality and beauty of growing up in a harsh urban environment. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - December 16th, 2004

BIG SOUL PRODUCTIONS and REDCLOUD STUDIOS present:

MOCCASIN FLATS – SEASON TWO
THESE MOCCASIN’S CONTINUE TO DANCE

Toronto, Ontario – The award winning, critically acclaimed television series MOCCASIN FLATS is back with eight exciting and provocative new episodes. The new season premieres on Saturday, January 8th at 9pm on APTN (additional airtimes Mondays at 12:30am and Fridays at 11:30pm). Created and produced by Jennifer Podemski and Laura Milliken, MOCCASIN FLATS is one of the most controversial and realistic portrayals of urban, contemporary aboriginal life dealing with issues such as HIV, homosexuality, gang violence and drug use.

In season two of MOCCASIN FLATS, Jonathan Bearclaw (Landon Montour), a reformed pimp and drug dealer is back with his girlfriend Tara (Sarah Podemski) and his son Ethan (Griffin Arcand). Life is better than Jonathan dreamed it could be, until he is seduced back onto the streets by a lethal money maker - Crystal Meth. Before he realizes it, Jonathan is caught up in a tangled web of crime, greed and desperation and his life begins to slip away. When his girlfriend and son begin slipping away into the arms of Jonathan’s arch nemesis, Mathew Merasty (Mathew Strongeagle), Jonathan’s jealousy spirals out of control leaving disaster in its wake.

Since premiering on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and Showcase Television in 2004, this series has garnered international attention and has been invited to screen throughout Europe and the U.S.

From it’s scripts to it’s soundtrack, Moccasin Flats is at the forefront of showcasing Canada’s hottest Native artists, actors, writers, directors and musicians. Directed by award-winning directors, Stacey Stewart Curtis, Rob King and Gil Cardinal, Moccasin Flats features a mix of veteran and first time actors, including: Gordon Tootoosis (Shoebox Zoo, On the Corner, North of 60), Tantoo Cardinal (Dances with Wolves, Scarlet Letter), Andrea Menard (Betrayed, The Pedestrian, Corner Gas), Ryan Black (The Rez, Striker) and fresh faced newcomers, Mathew Strongeagle, Candy Fox, Danna Henderson, Os Twelve and Sarah Podemski. The cast has created so much buzz that last year, a U.S casting director screened MOCCASIN FLATS and brought Mathew Strongeagle, one of the lead cast members, to the attention of filmmaker Steven Spielberg who later cast Mathew in his newest mini-series, INTO THE WEST.

Producer and creator Jennifer Podemski continues to work steadily in front of the camera as a series regular on Degrassi, and recent episodic roles on Eleventh Hour and This is Wonderland. Coming up she will be starring in CBC’s Movie of the Week DISTANT DRUMMING, which will be airing on Sunday, January 30th and the CTV Signature Series Movie of the Week, ONE DEAD INDIAN (airing spring 2005).

Broadcasters include: The Aboriginal People’s Television Network, The Saskatchewan Communications Network and Showcase Television.
