June 12th, 2012

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to send condolences to the family and friends of former Council Chief Myrtle Bush-Williams, who passed away yesterday at the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center.

She was first elected in 1982 and served three terms before becoming the first woman to run for the position of Grand Chief. She was elected once again in 1996 and served three more terms before retiring from politics in 2002.

“Myrtle was renowned for her intelligence, strong opinions and tenacity in dealing with outside governments,“ said former Grand Chief Andrew Delisle, Sr. “She had a remarkable strength of character and always carried herself with dignity both in political and private life.”

She is survived by her husband Franklin Williams, her son Chief Mike Bush, daughter Chris Bush-Diabo, and her sisters Pearl and Norma. She was predeceased by her son Mitchell and her first husband Osler Bush.

Visitation is at the Deer & Poissant Funeral Home.
The funeral service will take place Wednesday, June 13th at 2pm at the St. Francis Xavier Church.
