The City of Lloydminster and Onion Lake Cree Nation are preparing for the historic Treaty No.6 flag raising ceremony on Friday, July 20. This event will mark the importance of the traditional territory of Treaty No.6, which Lloydminster lies within, and strengthen the professional relationship the City and Onion Lake Cree First Nation share.

The Treaty No.6 flag will fly in perpetuity at City Hall, symbolically establishing the foundation for future cooperation and communication between the City and Onion Lake Cree First Nation.

“With mutual respect and inclusivity, it is important that we create awareness and develop better partnerships with our neighbour,” said Mayor Jeff Mulligan. “The City is proud to raise the Treaty No.6 flag at City Hall and foster its working relationship with the community of Onion Lake Cree First Nation.”

In the spirit of partnership and commitment to the future, the Treaty No.6 flag raising ceremony will be held at City Hall on Friday, July 20, from 10:30 a.m.to 12 p.m.:

• Flag pole procession by drummers and dancers
• Song by Onion Lake First Nations Choir
• Opening Prayer
• Opening remarks
• Flag Raising by Henry Beaudry on behalf of the Onion Lake Cree Nation and Vi Mallett of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #39 on behalf of the City
• Closing Remarks
• Lunch

“It is our vision to create more education and awareness to our neighbours whom we share this land and Treaty No.6 territory with on our Treaty. The Onion Lake Cree Nation has maintained our culture and traditions throughout time. We are a part of the vibrant economy of this region and look forward to continuing in contributing our resources and building relationships with the citizens of Lloydminster,” said Chief Wallace Fox. “The Nation is proud to have our Treaty No.6 flag flying at City Hall and reaffirms the relationship we have built with the Mayor and the people of Lloydminster.”

Dignitaries, citizens of Lloydminster, Onion Lake Cree Nation and other Treaty No.6 First Nations will be in attendance for this historic ceremony. Treaty No.6 was signed in 1876 at Fort Pitt, Sask. The territory spans across the central portions of the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and includes 56 First Nations.

As a progressive Indigenous Nation, Onion Lake Cree Nation has over 5,000 members and is situated 50 kilometres north of Lloydminster. The resource rich nation adheres to its own Cree Governance Structure and is the largest oil producing First Nation in Canada. During the Treaty No.6 Summit, held from June 3-7, 2012, Onion Lake Cree Nation entered into two treaties, one with the Northwestern Shoshone Tribe of Utah and the other with four First Nations in Alberta. Onion Lake Cree Nation believes in sovereignty and the protection of our inherent rights and Treaty. The advanced Nation broke ground last month for a future Treaty No.6 Embassy on their Nation.

Located on the border of Alberta and Saskatchewan, the City of Lloydminster is home to approximately 28,000 residents. The economic foundation of the City is comprised of oil and gas, agriculture and service industries. The City of Lloydminster is the first city to raise the Treaty No.6 flag within the Treaty No.6 territory.
