Nuu-chah-nulth Welcome Pole raised at Nootka Sound

Welcome Pole is raised at Yuquot (Friendly Cove) BC.

On Aug. 12, Nuu-chah-nulth people and their friends gathered at Yuquot (Friendly Cove) at Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island to raise a welcome pole on the bank above the Mowachaht's slice of the Pacific Ocean.

The place is historical, not only for the deep roots there of the Mowachaht, but it is known as the birthplace of British Columbia as this is where Captain James Cook first came to what would become the modern province and met the great chief Maquinna.

The pole is to represent Maquinna, and at the bottom of the pole are faces that represent the Mowachaht welcoming the world to their home.
