Michèle Audette - new president of Native Womens Association

August 27th, 2012 - Congratulations to Michele Audette, the newly elected President of the Native Womens Association of Canada (NWAC). She was chosen at the Annual General Meeting on the weekend, held in Saskatchewan. Michele's experience includes heading the Native Womens Association of Quebec, and was a deputy minister in the provincial government. Perhaps best known by many through her high profile role as co-chair at the Assembly of First Nations gatherings. NWAC renewed its call for a national inquiry into the hundreds of missing Aboriginal women in Canada.

Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo today offered congratulations to Michèle Audette who was elected President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada yesterday during NWAC’s 38th Annual General Assembly in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. "On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations and the national executive, I congratulate Michèle Audette on her election as NWAC President," said AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo. "I commend the leadership and dedication of former NWAC President Jeanette Corbiere Lavell, and look forward to continuing our work with NWAC and other groups on priority areas, including advancing a national commission of inquiry into murdered and missing women, strategies regarding the protection of water and the environment and ensuring community safety for all Indigenous peoples in Canada." Michèle Audette is from Mani Utenam, Quebec. She is former president of the Quebec Native Women Inc. and former deputy minister of the Status of Women Ministry in Quebec. (SOURCE:AFN)

A well-known advocate for her accompaniment in challenging injustices faced by Aboriginal women and widely recognized by her peers, Michèle Audette, was elected at the head of the Native Women's Association of Canada, at the annual gathering of this organization, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan."On behalf of the Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, I extend to Michèle Audette my warmest congratulations on her significant victory as the newly-elected president of the NWAC," stated the Chief of the AFNQL, Ghislain Picard."I will join undoubtedly with the voices of many women, and men also, who were overcome with a feeling of pride upon hearing the news that Michèle Audette will be leading the most important National Aboriginal organization, advocating particularly for the rights of Aboriginal women," added the Chief of the AFNQL "We wish her all the very best of success in this new challenge."
